Sono innumerevoli le attrazioni che l'isola di Filicudi offre ai visitatori, ma tra le più inconsuete e meravigliose è obbligatorio segnalare quella che risponde al nome di bioluminescenza. È difficile descrivere il fascino di questo luogo e del suo mare, reso luminosissimo dal proliferare di organismi unicellulari contenenti luciferina. Raggiunta la grotta in barca e varcatone l'ingresso, lo spettacolo dei colori e il contatto con il mormorio di queste acque, racchiuse in una suggestiva e luccicante piscina naturale, non possono che suscitare un senso di incantamento. La bioluminescenza è un fenomeno ben conosciuto in Centro America ed anche qui a Filicudi si può assaporarla in tutta la sua bellezza. Il segreto della fosforescenza risiede nella presenza di un organismo unicellulare appartenente al genere dei dinoflagellati. Basta cominciare a nuotare in questa impressionante scenografia per assistere all'accensione di quell'elettricità chimica.La luciferina è la sostanza responsabile della creazione del fascio di luce che segue la sagoma del bagnante. Il dinoflagellato più grande raggiunge solamente due millimetri di diametro e si nutre di altri microviventi. Queste curiose lucciole di mare, infatti, sono un po' animali, perché si alimentano di plancton, ma anche un po' vegetali, perché attuano la fotosintesi clorofilliana.Gli scienziati studiano il fenomeno della luminescenza dalla fine dell'Ottocento, ma le conoscenze del viaggiatore meno esperto sono per lo più limitate al rilievo della fluorescenza marina di organismi più noti come le meduse, qualche mollusco e alcuni pesci. Nella grotta, invece, siamo di fronte a qualcosa di davvero affascinante: un tappeto di microrganismi che conferisce al blu marino una brillantezza degna del più stellato e limpido dei cieli.

Luciferin is the substance responsible for creating the light beam that follows the shape of the bather. The largest dinoflagellate reaches only two millimeters in diameter and feeds on other micro-vents. These curious fireflies of sea, in fact, are a bit 'animals, because they feed on plankton, but also a little' plant, because they implement the photosynthesis chlorophyll. Scientists study the phenomenon of luminescence from the late nineteenth century, but the knowledge of less expert travelers are mostly limited to the survey of marine fluorescence of better known organisms such as jellyfish, some molluscs and some fish. In the cave, however, we are facing something really fascinating: a carpet of micro-organisms that gives the navy a brilliance worthy of the most starry and clear of the skies.
